Small in number but great in service best describes the Newville Borough Public Works Department. Under the direction of Street Superintendent David H. Handshew, the Public Works Department consists of two full time and several part time employees that include Jefferson Gurganious, Jr., William Peel, Rob Mellinger and Thomas Brink.
The Public Works Department maintains over five miles of borough and state highways and provides such important services as snow removal, street cleaning, storm water maintenance, maintenance of the Newville Community Park, maintenance of all borough and authority properties, curb and crosswalk painting throughout the town, maintenance of the town fountain and the historic Laughlin Mill. In addition, members of the department assists the Newville Borough Water and Sewer Authority in maintenance of the water and sewer systems. This includes repair of water leaks and sanitary sewer blockages.
The department provides curbside collection of leaves each fall, along with a spring and fall brush collection. Christmas trees are collected by the department during the first two weeks in January.
The Newville Public Works Department provides support for a wide variety of community events including the annual two day Fountain Festival, Memorial Day and Veterans Day observances, the annual Halloween Parade and Christmas Veterans Service.
