2013 NEWVILLE FOUNTAIN FESTIVAL DATES JUNE 14 & 15


The committee at this time is Carolyn Kough, Judy Hockensmith, Bob Shivley, Dick Copenhaver, Tim Wolfe, Fred Potzer and Karen Ward, a new member. Please welcome her.

The 2013 Newville Fountain Festival will held on Friday, June 14 and Saturday, June 15.

The 2013 Theme is “Salute to the Grand Ole Flag”
Anyone interested in being a craft vendor is ask to contact Bob Shivley @ 717-226-1010 or Judy Hockensmith @ 717-776-3840.
Food vendors are ask to contact Judy Hockensmith @ 717-776-3840.

High School and College Students are needed for some work during the two day event such as handling soda and ice, also trash removal, and other request as assigned.
Hours would be Friday, 12 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Saturday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Pay would be $11 per hour. Anyone interested should contact Fred Potzer @ 717-776-7633 or come to the Newville Borough Office 4 West Street, Newville, Pa.

New members and volunteers are always welcomed.
Fountain Festival Meeting – April 2, 2013 at 7:00 pm - Newville Borough Office
Attendance - Carolyn Kough, Rausa Roscinski, Karen Ward, Fred Potzer, Allyson Shively, and Bob Shively.
1. Dates for 2013 Fountain Festival – June 14 and 15, 2013
a. Theme – “Salute to the Grand Ole Flag”
2. Saylors soda shipment with some broken cans
a. Saylors has offered for use with Fountain Festival Chicken BBQ
b. Needs to be sorted from broken cans before this weekend (April 6th)
c. Fred Potzer, Mike Fry, Dave Handshew, Bob Roscinski, & Steve Mixell available to sort
and clean. Plan to get skid to Borough garage yet this week
3. Carolyn – review of calls, contacts and status updates
a. Anyone with entertainment request or contacts for Friday evening – see Carolyn
b. Bob Over doing the trivia contest Friday evening
c. Scott Donato announcing parade and doing Tractor Twang at fountain after parade
d. Parade Carlisle Band, Zembo Band, Zembo mini cars, Green Ridge float, Zion church
float, letters to area Farm Women groups.
e. Horse and wagon tour Saturday morning
f. Jane Graham doing walking tour – Big Spring Presbyterian cemetery
g. Library book sale is up in the air at this point?
h. Historical Society open for visits and tours
i. Quilt display – location? – Fred to check with Ken Tuckey for old bank space?
j. Bailey’s Crossing back again for Saturday live entertainment
k. Model train tours with Green Ridge
l. Pat Reed checking with petting zoo and kids alley

4. Chicken BBQ fundraiser – April 13th at 10:00 am (help arrive at 9:30)
a. Using edge of Adams Bank lot
b. Frank Yost to cook chicken. Cooking to rear of old Walters building.
c. Dave Handshew providing trailer to sell chicken
d. Will be doing 360 halves (reduced from 400 last year due to leftover halves)
e. $ 7.00 for dinner with baked beans, applesauce, dessert, and soda
f. $ 4.50 for half chicken only
5. Craft Vendors report
a. Friday evening vendor sales again ok on Parsonage Street. Need to get some additional
string lighting for Parsonage Street.
b. Applications sent out – approximately 130 total
c. 5 vendors confirmed already
d. 2 emails from the Puppetmeister? Have not replied to date.
6. Food vendors
a. Amy’s Thai Cuisine sold – not sure for replacement
i. Shade Tree Commission?
b. Beaston ice cream sold to Stroup’s in McAlisterville – not sure if they will attend or not?
c. Judy still working on electrical support for food vendors
d. Ice cream options?
i. Find other vendor
ii. Senior Center sell soft serve also? Rent or borrow soft serve machine?

7. Car Show
a. Dick Copenhaver will be coordinating again this year.

a. Fred provided list from Karen email of school students willing to help with soda and ice.
b. Football team may also be available to help

a. Possible 3 on 3 basketball tournament at park? – Karen? - (Wedding at Zion Church?)

NEWVILLE FOUNTAIN FESTIVAL COMMITTEE MEETING
MAY 7, 2013 AT 7:00PM
NEWVILLE BOROUGH OFFICE
MEMBERS PRESENT: Carolyn Kough, Chairman, Judy Hockensmith, Karen Ward, Dick
Copenhaver, Pat Reed, Rausa Roscinski, Fred Potzer.
Chicken Barbeque: Event was very successful. Sold out of chicken and completed event at
12:30PM. Profit - $1,010.81. Committee members very pleased with the event. Judy suggested
that next year the committee should request Saylor’s Market to coordinate their produce sale
with the barbeque.
Entertainment: The entertainment on Friday, 4:30PM to 5:30PM will be Frances Drost ($100);
Trivia Contest at 6:00PM hosted by Bob Over. Carolyn asked for contestants. Karen will check
on three school teachers. Newville Lions Club will be asked to provide three members. Scott
Donator will MC Parade and host the street dance; Donato also providing a DJ for Saturday
($300)
Porch Contest: Judging will take place Friday afternoon at 5:00PM; contestants may contact the
borough office at 776-7633 to be judged.
Parade: Carolyn has confirmed the Zembo mini cars will participate, along with a local dance
team, and the Carlisle Band. Several groups will provide floats: Newville Shade Tree
Commission, American Legion Post 421 are planning to send floats. There has been some
indication that the Little League Teams will be making a comeback this year, and plan to march
in several parades. Considerable discussion was devoted to the selection of a parade marshal.
The consensus of the committee was to authorize Carolyn to contact as many local WWII and
Korean War veterans as possible to serve as “Honorary Grant Marshals”. Karen will look into the trolley car for transportation. Pat will provide a listing of the veterans.
Saturday Events: Kids Alley will be located on W. Big Spring Avenue near Farmers National Bank
(snow fence needed); Linda Bunning will provide wagon tours; Jane Graham will provide tours
of the Newville Cemetery; John Graham Library will have a book sale, but it will be much
smaller than usual; Karen requested a “shady” location for the pony rides. Fred suggested
Heller Street between Glebe Ave and Main Street (water possible from Bob Shively ???); Chuck
Egger has the 5k run well at hand; Nancy Baker reports FHC will be ready to go with the
fireman’s breakfast.
Food Vendors: Judy announced Bucky will not return. A new vendor, Bryan Horner will be
joining the festival this year. He will provide pulled brisket beef sandwiches, pork sandwiches
with cole slaw, and fried pickles. Rausa reported the Senior Center will provide ice cream, but they need 220 power for the soft serve ice cream machine. Fred will check on power
availability.
Quilt Raffle: Rausa reported that ticket sales are going well – 40 tickets were sold recently at
Doubling Gap. Carolyn reminded everyone we have 1,000 tickets to sell.
Car Show: Dick displayed the commemorative dash plates and announced letters have been
mailed out to the local classic and antique car enthusiasts. Dick praised the work of Judy at
Glory Awards who designed the dash plate. Car show participants have been asked to display
the American flag in or on their vehicles during the show. Dick confirmed that rest room
facilities will be available on Parsonage Street for the car show participants. Dick suggested that
the American LaFrance antique engine from FHC should be invited to participate.
Dick will arrange for the antique cannon to be displayed at the Veterans Memorial.
Shippensburg Swing Band: The Shippensburg Swing Band under the direction of Vicki Baker
will perform on the lawn in front of the Big Spring Presbyterian Church on Saturday at 1:00PM.
Miscellaneous Items:
-Carolyn has sent letters of invitation to the Cumberland County Commissioners, Rep.
Steve Bloom, the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and the Cumberland County Farm Women
Assoc.
- The VFW and American Legion have been sent special invitations.
- Sponsors are still welcome. ACNB has provided a $500 donation; a $300 donation was
received from the Big Spring Pharmacy. Cornerstone Credit Union may provide a $300
donation.
-Dan Sheaffer at the Newville Print Shop will be asked to print the brochure. Carolyn
will coordinate the details with the print shop. It was noted that Dan donates the raffle tickets and the posters for the festival.
Soda and Ice: There will be three soda stands, Doyle Strouss will allow the use of his garage for
storage of soda and ice. The following five individuals will be hired to work the soda and ice
detail: Tom Pastor, Danny Heckendorn, Marcus Marpoe, Brady Weaver, and Joshua Henry.
Next Meeting:
MONDAY, MAY 20, 2013 at 7:00PM in the Borough Office.
This will be the final meeting prior to the festival.
