Borough Improvement Projects Planned for 2013

Borough Improvement Projects Planned for 2013

The Borough of Newville has several improvement projects planned for 2013 due in large measure to Community Development Block Grant funding available through the Cumberland County Redevelopment Authority and the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners.

A 2012 CDBG grant totaling $55,000 will be allocated to the final phase of improvements at the Newville Community Park. The existing tennis and basketball courts will be removed and re-constructed. Off street parking will be added. A new park sign will be constructed. The project is presently in the design stage and should be ready for bid by June 1, 2013.

Borough Council has been notified of a $50,000 CDBG grant that will be used for street resurfacing. The Borough Manager and Borough Engineer will be developing street resurfacing projects for these funds over the next few weeks. Paving work will be completed this summer.

Newville Borough has also been informed that it is eligible for Hazard Mitigation Grant funding through the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Borough Council has selected a project on North Corporation Street for this funding. Borough officials would like to replace the culvert pipe on the Cloverdale Run which runs beneath N. Corporation Street near Green Street. The Borough Engineer’s cost estimate for this project is $33,050.  The project would eliminate the potential for street and property flooding in the area.  The Borough will be eligible to apply for 75% of the project costs or $24,787. The borough may be eligible to use CDBG funding for the local match requirement of 25%, or $8,262.

The Borough Engineer is Erik Vranich of William F. Hill and Associates.
