AUGUST - SEPTEMBER EVENTS AT THE BIG SPRING SENIOR CENTER

Open Resource Session – Are you interested in an Open Resource Session for your technology questions?  Well, we at the Big Spring Senior Center would like to provide individuals an opportunity to come to the Center to ask their technology questions regarding their computer, smart phone, laptop, etc.  Also, we can provide instructional time to learn basic computer programs, i.e. Facebook, Internet, Shopping on the Internet, Internet Security, etc.  You would be welcome to bring in your handheld equipment to the Session.  Please contact Cathy at the Big Spring Senior Center at 717-776-4478 to discuss your needs and set up an appointment.
Thursday, August 23rd at 9:00 a.m.  Zumba Gold:  Held at the First United Presbyterian Church, 111 Big Spring Avenue, Newville.  The cost is $2.00 a class for those 60+/$5.00 a class for those 50 to 59.  Zumba Gold is a low-intensity version of the Latin dance-inspired fitness class aimed at a more mature audience.  Research at Minot State University in North Dakota has indicated that Zumba not only has an effect on physical fitness, but also on cognitive (mental function).  No need to sign up; just walk in.
Thursday, August 23rd at 9:00 a.m.:  Games at the Center:  We have lots of opportunities to play cards and games at the Center.  On Thursday mornings, at 9:30 a.m., we play 500 with a dedicated group of card player and are always looking for new players.  Come out to play Corn Hole, Shuffleboard, Ladder Ball and board games in the mornings too.  On Thursday afternoons, at 12:30 p.m., Bob Ballard or Bill and Linda Sweigart lead us in a variety of board and card games.  Don’t ever consider playing games as frivolous; studies show that it stimulates your brain which helps counter the aging process.
Thursday, August 23rd at 9:30 a.m.  Walk w/Ease for Arthritis:  Come join us on Monday and Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. wearing comfortable walking shoes.  We will begin with warm ups and proceed with a 30 minute walk and cool down.  Walking will be at a pace acceptable to all those in attendance and we meet at the Newville Rails to Trails Trailhead.

Monday, August 27th at 2:00 p.m.  Watercolor Painting Opportunity:  Do you have an interest in water coloring?  It takes space, inspiration and motivation and we can help.  Join our friendly group of painters.  The cost is $1/week to the Senior Center.  Please call 717-776-4478 to get more information.
Tuesday, August 28th at 9:00 a.m.  Crafts at the Senior Center:  We could use your help, hands and ideas.  Come and make beaded jewelry, seasonal and everyday crafts, as well as making new friends.
Tuesday, August 28th at 9:00 a.m.  T’ai Chi for Arthritis:  Held at the First United Presbyterian Church, 111 Big Spring Avenue, Newville.  Cost is a suggested $5 donation per class.  To register, call 776-4478.  Walk-ins are welcome.

Tuesday, August 28th at 6:00 p.m.  Game Night:  Want to have something fun to do in the evening?  Why not come out to the Senior Center (Mountain View Apartments Community Room) and play a round or two of board/card games.  Bring a treat to share or just bring yourself.  We promise that there will be lots of laughter to go around for all.
Wednesday, August 29th at 8:30 a.m. Yoga:  This class is held at Big Spring Presbyterian Church, 25 South Corporation Street, Newville.  Yoga is a mind-body practice that combines stretching exercises, controlled breathing and relaxation.  Yoga can help reduce stress, lower blood pressure and improve heart function (from the Mayo Clinic website).  The cost is $65 non-member/$55 if you are a member of the Senior Center for a 10 week session.  Sessions can be pro-rated if you elect to join mid-session.
Wednesday, August 29th at 9:30 a.m.  Mind Matters – Human Trafficking in the United States.  While human trafficking has received more media attention in recent years, many still believe it only happens in other nations.  This presentation will discuss the current state of knowledge about human trafficking within the United States as it occurs to citizens of other nations as well as U.S. citizens.
Wednesday, August 29th at 1:00 p.m. Bible Study:  Come out to enjoy an informative hour of Bible Study by Pastor John Hess of the Newville Church of the Brethren.  Pastor Hess will be using the epistle of First John as his study.
UPCOMING EVENTS
Men’s Breakfast:  Friday, September 7th at 8:30 a.m.  Come out to the Big Spring Senior Center and enjoy a hot, homemade breakfast made by Cathy and her volunteers of the Senior Center.  Cost is $5.00.
The Big Spring Center is located at 91 Doubling Gap Road, Suite #1, Newville, in the Mountain View Apartment Building.  The phone number is 717-776-4478.  Hours are weekdays 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  A hot congregate meal is served at 11:30 a.m.  Please call two weekdays ahead to make a meal reservation.
