Open Resource Session – Are you interested in an Open Resource Session for your technology questions? Well, we at the Big Spring Senior Center would like to provide individuals an opportunity to come to the Center to ask their technology questions regarding their computer, smart phone, laptop, etc. Also, we can provide instructional time to learn basic computer programs, i.e. Facebook, Internet, Shopping on the Internet, Internet Security, etc. You would be welcome to bring in your handheld equipment to the Session. Free Income Tax Preparation by AARP Tax Aides: Once again, AARP volunteers will prepare taxes for senior citizens’ and those of low income without charge at the Big Spring Senior Center, 91 Doubling Gap Road, Newville, every Friday through April 14th except for March 30th. Appointments must be made and are held only on Fridays. The Center is handling the scheduling. Call 717-776-4478 weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The volunteers have recently completed training to keep current. Please note that donations are accepted to cover the cost of utilities, etc.
Thursday, March 15th at 9:00 a.m. Zumba Gold: Held at the First United Presbyterian Church, 111 Big Spring Avenue, Newville. The cost is $2.00 a class for those 60+/$5.00 a class for those 50 to 59. Zumba Gold is a low-intensity version of the Latin dance-inspired fitness class aimed at a more mature audience. Research at Minot State University in North Dakota has indicated that Zumba not only has an effect on physical fitness, but also on cognitive (mental function). No need to sign up; just walk in.
Thursday, March 15th at 9:00 a.m.: Games at the Center: We have lots of opportunities to play cards and games at the Center. On Thursday mornings, at 9:30 a.m., we play 500 with a dedicated group of card player and are always looking for new players. Come out to play Corn Hole, Shuffleboard, Ladder Ball and board games in the mornings too. On Thursday afternoons, at 12:30 p.m., Bob Ballard or Bill and Linda Sweigart lead us in a variety of board and card games. Don’t ever consider playing games as frivolous; studies show that it stimulates your brain which helps counter the aging process.
Friday, March 16th at 9:00 a.m. Chinese Checkers: If you have every played Chinese checkers you know how much fun it is. Come join us! Even if you have never played, you will catch on quickly. Please call us the day before if you plan to attend.
Friday, March 16th at 12:00 p.m. Stretching: We stretch, using a video, at the Big Spring Senior Center. It is free for those who are members/$5 for non-members or those 50 to 59. Please check the activity calendar for dates and times; although it is usually on Friday. Just walk in.

Monday, March 19th at 2:00 p.m. Watercolor Painting Opportunity: Do you have an interest in water coloring? It takes space, inspiration and motivation and we can help. Join our established group of painters. The cost is $1 each week to the Senior Center. Please call 776-4478 to register and to get more information.
Tuesday, March 20th at 9:00 a.m. Crafts: We could use your help, hands and ideas. Come and make beaded jewelry, seasonal and everyday crafts, as well as new friends. This program is open to the public. Call 717-776-4478 to let us know that you are coming.
Tuesday, March 20th at 9:00 a.m. T’ai Chi for Arthritis: Held at the First United Presbyterian Church, 111 Big Spring Avenue, Newville. Cost is a suggested $5 donation per class. To register, call 776-4478. Walk-ins are welcome.

Wednesday, March 21st at 8:30 a.m. Yoga: This class is held at Big Spring Presbyterian Church, 25 South Corporation Street, Newville. Yoga is a mind-body practice that combines stretching exercises, controlled breathing and relaxation. Yoga can help reduce stress, lower blood pressure and improve heart function (from the Mayo Clinic website). The cost is $65 non-member/$55 if you are a member of the Senior Center for a 10 week session. Sessions can be pro-rated if you elect to join mid-session.
Wednesday, March 21st at 1:00 p.m. Bible Study: Come out to enjoy an informative hour of Bible Study by Pastor Don Snyder of Doubling Gap Church of God. His study will be on the Book of Hebrews, the Meaning of Passover and the Resurrection.
Wednesday, March 28th at 9:30 a.m. MindMatters – Faith & Freedom in the Civil War: During the 19th Century, the slavery debate was influenced significantly by biblical passages to support one side or the other. Both sides came to interpret scripture in ways that would support their views. Barbara Franco of the Seminary Ridge Museum will explain how those interpretive principles still have great influence on today’s society.
Tuesday, April 10th Roots Market, Manheim: We will be leaving the Senior Center at 8:00 a.m. Cost will be $15 for roundtrip transportation and lunch is on your own. Large coolers will be provided to bring home your goodies. Sign up and pay no later than Friday, April 6th.
