The Newville Water and Sewer Authority was selected by the PA DEP to once again received the Area Wide Optimization Award (AWOP) at this year’s annual conference of the PA Rural Water Association held in State College.
Pennsylvania has participated in the AWOP program since 2003, and there are currently 20 states participating in the program along with the EPA. There are 355 filter water plants operating in the Commonwealth of PA. Of that number 198 participating in the Area Wide Optimization Program. The Cool Spring Water Treatment plant operated by the Newville Borough Water and Sewer Authority was one of six plants in Pennsylvania selected to receive this award. The award is presented to filter treatment plants that have addressed most of their Filter Plant Performance Evaluation comments provided by the PA DEP. The Cool Spring plant received a PA DEP filtration performance evaluation in January, and scored high overall in the evaluation. Accepting the award on behalf of the Newville Borough Water and Sewer Authority were William F. Hill, P.E., Authority Engineer, and Joseph Lehman, Chief Plants Operator. NWSA licensed water plant operators include Chief Plant Operator Joseph Lehman and Assistant Plant Operator Kevin Page.
