POWER OUTAGES CONCERN BOROUGH OFFICIALS

POWER OUTAGES CONCERN BOROUGH OFFICIALS

Newville Borough officials have developed a plan to respond to power outages that have occurred throughout the day on Tuesday, January 7, 2014. PPL officials have reported problems in the Newville / Penn Township area stemming from a switch at their Mt. Rock substation. Borough officials are especially concerned for residents given the exceptionally low temperatures forecast for the area through Wednesday.

Mayor William Toth has issued an advisory to Borough residents that in the event of a prolonged power outage, the Friendship Hose Company No. 1 fire station at 15 East Big Spring Avenue will act as a warming station. Councilmen Clarence Fry and Glenn Harry have offered to provide transportation to residents who are unable to travel to the fire station. Both men own multi-passenger vans. Residents in need of assistance may contact the Borough Office at 776-7633 or Mayor Toth at 440-6575.

Assistance is also available through the Cumberland County Office of Aging for elderly residents experiencing home heating problems.  Individuals in need of assistance should contact the Cumberland County Emergency Operations Center at 243-4121. They will be directed to a caseworker for the Office of Aging.
