Exercise Classes Offered
Zumba Gold – every Monday and Thursday at 9:00 a.m. at the First United Presbyterian Church. The cost is $2.00 a class for those 60+/$5.0 a class for those 50 – 59. Zumba Gold is a low intensity version of the Latin dance-inspired fitness class aimed at a more mature audience. Research at Minot State University in North Dakota has indicated that classes not only have an effect on physical fitness, but also on cognitive (mental) function. No need to sign up; just walk in.
Stretching – We stretch, using a video at the Big Spring Senior Center. It is free for those who are members/$5.00 for non-members or those 50 – 59. Call for information on days/times (usually on Fridays).
T’ai Chi – In December this session is meeting on Tuesday mornings at 9 a.m. at the First United Presbyterian Church. The cost is $52 for members and $62 for non-members. T’ai Chi is often described as “meditation in motion,” but it might well be called “medication in motion.” There is a growing evidence that this mind-body practice, which originated in China as a martial art, has value in treating or preventing many health problems. Please contact Center for information.
Yoga –This session is held from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. held downstairs at the Big Spring Events and Community Center, 2 Chestnut Street, Newville (side door). Yoga is a mind-body practice that combines stretching exercises, controlled breathing and relaxation. Yoga can help reduce stress, lower blood pressure and improve heart function (from the Mayo Clinic website). The cost is $65/$55 if you are a member of the Senior Center.
Emergency Preparedness – On March 8th at 12:15 p.m. our volunteer Mildred Brown will be conducting a program on Emergency Preparedness in your home when you cannot leave your home due to weather conditions.
Penn State Extension Program - On March 15th at 12:25 p.m. staff from the Penn State Extension Service will be here to discuss sodium and food label reading and its effects on heart disease.
Free Income Tax Preparation by ARRP Tax Aides: Once again, AARP volunteers will prepare senior citizen’s income taxes without charge at the Big Spring Senior Center every Friday from February 5 to April 15, except for March 25. Appointments must be made and are held only on Fridays. The Center is handling the scheduling. Call the 776-4478 weekdays from 8:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. The volunteers have recently completed training to keep current. Please note that donations are accepted to cover the cost of utilities, etc.
