Big Spring Senior Center
Thursday, September 12th: Memorial Trip: Trip includes Flight 93 National Memorial, Lunch Smorgasbord at Oakhurst Grille, Quecreek Mine Rescue Site, Guide, Guide Tip, and Transportation on a 54-passenger coach bus (2 buses). Cost is $105 per person. Branch Creek Place, the senior center in Shippensburg, is your host for this trip and has invited all Cumberland County Senior Center participants. Contact Cathy or Rausa if you are interested in going and we can set up a carpool to the Branch Creek Place to meet the bus. We will be leaving/carpooling from the Big Spring Senior Center at 8:00 a.m. for Branch Creek Place to load the bus.
Weekly Exercise Events
Fit and Fun/Zumba Gold Aerobics: Every Monday and Thursday at 8:30 a.m. at the First United Presbyterian Church. The cost is $2.00 a class for those 60+/$5.00 a class for those 50 to 59. Zumba Gold is a lower-intensity version of the Latin dance-inspired fitness class aimed at a more mature audience. Research at Minot State University in North Dakota has indicated that classes not only have an effect on physical fitness, but also on cognitive (mental) function. No need to sign up; just walk in.
Yoga: Wednesdays from 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. at the Big Spring Presbyterian Church, 25 South Corporation Street, Newville. Yoga is a mind body practice that combines stretching exercises, controlled breathing and relaxation. Yoga can help reduce stress, lower blood pressure and improve heart function. (from the Mayo Clinic website) The cost is $65/$55 if you are a member of the Senior Center. Contact the Big Spring Senior Center to find out when the first program starts (pro-ration in mid-program is permitted). Registration and payment due before the class starts. Will accept pro-rated registrations for session currently in progress.
Stretching--We stretch, using a video at the Big Spring Senior Center, free for those who are members/$5.00 for non-members or those 50 to 59. Please check the activity calendar for the time. Just walk in.
Walk w/Ease Group Walking Program- Several folks are enjoying the Walk w/Ease Program at the Newville Rails to Trails. There is no structured curriculum. We meet at the Newville Trailhead, do some pre-walking stretches, walk for approximately 30-45 minutes and end with post-walking stretches. Come join us at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. If you have arthritis, this program began as the Walk w/East Program with Arthritis. Walking will be at your own pace. This program is weather permitting.
T'ai Chi for Arthritis: Meets on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. - 10 a.m. at the First United Presbyterian Church. Cost is a $5 donation per class attended. To register, call 717-776-4478. T'ai Chi for Arthritis is for people of all ages and fitness levels and is especially safe for people with arthritis and other joint disorders or related auto-immune diseases.
